What is VGC?
Virginia Government Communicators (VGC) is a nonprofit professional organization that promotes excellence in public service communications. The organization achieves this mission by serving the professional development needs of Virginia state and local government communicators, fostering cooperation and understanding among these organizations, and advocating honest and effective communications between Virginia's government and its citizens.
When and where does VGC meet?
Professional development workshops are generally held at least three times each year throughout the Commonwealth. And each year, VGC holds an annual conference for educational development and the election of new officers.
Also, join the Virginia Government Communicators page on Facebook to share information with fellow members and keep up with the latest news and development.
Who Belongs?
VGC has a membership of about 200 communicators representing 80 state and local agencies and organizations. Full membership, with voting privileges, is open to public affairs and communications professionals currently employed by state or local governments of Virginia.
Former state and local government public affairs and communications professionals, federal government public affairs and communications professionals in Virginia, college students enrolled in courses and programs related to public affairs and communications, as well as recent college graduates (within 12 months). Consultants and representatives of non-profit groups whose activities are linked to state or local governments in Virginia are also invited to join with full membership privileges.
Why should I join?
Each new member improves the quality of VGC as it addresses the common experiences and work concerns of state and local government public affairs and communications professionals. Membership can be beneficial for establishing contacts throughout Virginia government and for gaining information about the news media, legislative proposals and intergovernmental issues coordination. These issues are unique to public service and might not be addressed by other public relations and communications professional organizations. Meeting topics also often include emerging technology that can help us to do our jobs more efficiently and effectively.
In addition, all members receive notice of association meetings, workshops and conferences; discounted workshop attendance fees, a membership directory and any other resource materials distributed by the association.
How do I join?
Membership dues are $25 per year and $10 for eligible students. Dues are payable in July at the beginning of the state fiscal year, or upon joining. Make your check payable to VGC and send it to P.O. Box 18282, Richmond, VA 23226. You may register online via Paypal; use the email address
